About Our Reflective Coatings

OMI applies reflective coatings using an Airco Temescal FCE 4800 coating machine. This fully automated coater has the following key features:

4-Pocket electron beam gun and Inficon IC5 controller provide excellent control of material evaporation rates and layer thickness.
Veeco Mark II+ ion source for Ion Bombardment Assisted Deposition (IBAD) to produce dense coating layers.
Three station planetary rotation mirror holder provides excellent coating uniformity while coating up to three 20” diameter mirrors in one coating run.
Single rotation holder for coating single mirrors up to 1.1 meter (46") diameter.

At OMI we specialize in reflective coatings for the visible, near UV and Infra-red. We offer an enhanced aluminum coating to cover the visible wavelengths. Our IBAD-96 is an ion bombardment assisted deposition coating featuring greater than 96% average reflectivity across the visible spectrum. IBAD-96 is a durable, pin-hole free enhanced aluminum coating that will provide years of service and hold up well in harsh observing environments.

Our IBAD-96 provides average reflectivity greater than 96% across the visible spectrum.

Protected gold coating

OMI also offers a protected gold coating that features high reflectivity from 600 nm into the near IR. The protective overcoat layer is SiO2, which provides excellent long term environmental protection and scratch resistance.

Old coating removal
At OMI we use a mild solution of ferric chloride to remove your old coating. This chemical safely removes all coating residue without affecting the underlying glass and its optical figure. Please add the following charge to remove the old coating from your mirror.*

*If you send your secondary mirror with the primary for re-coating there is no charge to remove the old coating from the secondary.

While your mirror is at our facility, you have the option of letting us test it for you. Learn more about our testing services.
